Santorini, Fasting and Aging in Reverse

 So, I’m so confused, i'm drinking wine, eating bread and cheese, not fasting and my stats on my ring are better than ever. That’s it, I have to move to a Greek Island in order to age in reverse.

 

           You’ve likely seen pictures of Santorini. The white dome shaped cave houses in the side of the mountain. The contrasting multi shades of blue from the Aegean Sea below and the painted roofs above. It looks like screensaver in every direction.

 

            Pictures truly don’t do it justice. As I sit on the painted white clay patio of Little Rock Villa (easy now, its 400 sq feet, with one bathroom, more nook than a villa) tears begin to stream down my face. Yes, I know, I cry as often as I brush my teeth, but this emotion is not the norm.  

 



            “Mom, don’t cry, daddy doesn’t like it when you cry,” offers eight-year-old Ben seated from the end of my lounge chair. His body and the sea a thousand feet below making an optical illusion that looks like he is about to fall off the cliff. A trick of the mind that unsettles my husband of now 22 years as of yesterday, who sits next to me.  But I am uncharacteristically calm. The peace is beyond my understanding. 

 

            We have been travelling for five days; a red eye across the world, ✈️ another packed plane, taxis, a five-hour boat ride, yet another taxi, more boats, endless walking. This isn’t our usual lazy beach and boat vacation that has become the hallmark of our SandEverywhere family  We are a family of five traversing through Greece  🇬🇷 with two backpacks each. 🎒 And yet, at this moment I have never been more relaxed.

 

           “These are happy tears babe.” I assure Ben. Unsure myself where they were coming from. I have been to beautiful places before. Traveling for our family is where we are at our best. But this is different. This isn’t just pretty, this place touches something in my soul. Dan and I have always said we need to live by the water. Any water will do. But this water, these volcanic islands, this air, so much closer than I’ve ever been to the Syrian soil that’s in my blood, this has impacted me on a cellular level.

 

            You know I’m a science girl, so it’s not just how I feel, my stats are reflecting it. My HRV is higher than it’s been since we lived in Mexico in 2023, my resting heart rate has lowered my VO2Max has increased and my cardio age as gone down. Yes, not being at work is a key, but as an entrepreneur now, I can’t say I’m actually not working on his trip, I am after all writing this.  We’re walking more which we know is the best movement for our bodies. I’m sleeping better than ever, a result of being outside most of the day. I truly believe the food is a major cause. There isn’t an ounce of fake food around us. The tzatziki and pita and stuffed grape leaves and grilled octopus is making my cells sing. But here's the confusing part. I’m drinking wine and eating cheese!  Both of those things usually lower my scores dramatically. And I’m not fasting, something that typically gives me better numbers

 

           I’m not fighting it.

 

           Something in this mélange of new food, location and routine is helping me discover new insights into my healthy body.  My eyes are wide open and I’m taking notes. I might not be able to relocate to a tiny cave on the side of a cliff in the Mediterranean (yet) but I know I can incorporate so much of this lifestyle back home, and of course share it with you so you can too!
