A Time For Grief

Were all just walking each other home.
Were all just walking each other home.

Every time I try to keep the heavy, personal parts of my life out of my work, I fail. It’s probably a gift from God, no matter how much I try to resist it. He knows that sometimes what we need most is real, honest suffering—to remind us we’re not alone. At least, that’s my prayer.

I lost a dear friend this morning.

This is not the email blast I had planned. I was supposed to tell you about what’s on the podcast this week. Instead, God has me here.

Last night before I went to sleep, this quote came to mind:

“We are all just walking each other home.” — Richard Alpert

I left my friend’s house knowing in my heart that God would take her home within the next few hours.

I spent the last few days at her house, holding her hand and sharing in the sacred experience of dying—with her mother, her children, and our family. I spent the last few months going back and forth to the hospital as her body declined. I spent the last few years praying to Jesus that cancer wouldn’t take her the way it took her husband over a decade ago.

And I have spent the last thirteen years holding her hand through our babies, her losses, her joys, and—sadly—so many hard seasons.

We were walking each other home from the day we met.

In church this morning, this verse came up. It brought me comfort, knowing she is now reunited with her husband, who was taken—as she was—far too early.

“Then I saw a door standing open in heaven, and the same voice I had heard before spoke to me like a trumpet blast. The voice said, ‘Come up here and I will show you what must happen after this.” And instantly I was in the Spirit, and I saw a throne in heaven…Revelations 4:1

I know so many of you are in a season of loss and grief, just as I am. And many of you are walking someone home right now. What a sacred gift it is to love someone in this way.

Our greatest calling is love—and to be present with someone as they go home is one of the most profound acts of love we are ever given.

These last few days have left me tender. I’ve had to gently remind myself to eat warm, nourishing meals, to hydrate more than usual, and to take the tracker off and simply be. Grief, for me, steals my voice. I find it hard to speak, to sing, even to worship. And yet, it is there—in the quiet and the emptiness—that the Lord meets me. He fills me. He washes over me. He provides in my depletion.

May He do the same for you.

I am here too—part of this community with you. All of us, in our own time, walking one another home toward the throne, gathering our loved ones in heaven along the way.

With heartache and love,

Kerstin
